00 Overview · Lesson 1 of 12
Welcome to Spatial Thinking!
Congratulations! You’ve taken the first step on a personal design journey—one that you’ve already begun—having arrived upon these doors, with somewhat of a guarantee that you will get closer to becoming exceptional!!
Exclamation marks aside… the guarantee is an interesting claim. Can Spatial Thinking guarantee innovative, strong design thinking? No-one else seems to guarantee design results, why can we? What is so different about Spatial Thinking that others have missed? What even is design process?
One of the most important requirements that a designer needs to improve is their design process. Spatial Thinking was invented to do exactly this. Generally, design process is taught poorly at university and practiced crudely in the profession. Ask any professional what their design process is and watch them squirm. They'd confuse it with the business of delivering design vision into reality. Only real designers might know how to answer because they live "design" every day.
Design is a lifestyle. It embraces all of life, and all factors within it. So it's understandable that design embraces far more than design itself! It's personal, professional, cultural, existential, spiritual, whimsical and every other "al" word you can think of. How many of these words does your university teach? Very few. Try to get guidance on the personal and psychological processes and watch the lessons fall short. Do they even know how to make strong designers and teach powerful design processes? Have they ever even stated it as a goal for their students?
The only way anyone can teach design process is if the teachers are real designers. However most university professors are researchers, not actual designers. And yet not all designers can teach, nor get out of their ego enough to care. This is what makes Spatial Thinking unique, because it was created by a veteran design expert who loves to teach!
Spatial Thinking Framework differentiates itself as a structured design and personal process created by a professional cutting edge designer who knows what it's like to create something new.
The defining feature of the Spatial Thinking Framework is the level of precision and open-endedness of the process. We're obsessed with finding something simple and precise that expands infinitely into effective, complex outcomes. We are precise in how we describe the process and the concepts, the words we use are honed over years of experience, and cannot be easily replaced. This preciseness makes you stronger, where in contrast, loosely defined concepts will make you weaker and confused.
By leaning into precision, concepts within Spatial Thinking become powerful drivers, engines of creative force. Imbued in the words are meanings that can inspire and can be simple and complex at the same time. And this leads to an infinitely strong design process.
