Student Stories & Reviews
What changes when the process becomes clearer.
Spatial Thinking has grown through teaching. These are experiences from students who brought real projects, difficult decisions and unfinished ideas into Mini Studio, coaching and architecture teaching.
“Spatial Thinking has taught me more about architecture than three years of architecture school.”

“Spatial Thinking has taught me more about architecture than three years of architecture school.”
“Halfway through my uni and still haven't found anyone who taught as much as you.”
“Ken and the Spatial Thinking platform has greatly helped develop my understanding of design and architecture. The platform has allowed me to push myself further and think deeper into design to create something meaningful. Ken has been a great help where my tutors weren’t and it is a great platform to go the extra step further with design.”

Design Process
Students describe how their understanding of ideas, concepts and creative work changed.
“Spatial Thinking has shown me that a process cannot be detached from personal experience; instead, it must be woven into everyday life. To keep the two apart leaves the ideas born from daily encounters untouched and undefined. It dismisses the quiet inspiration reality constantly offers and overlooks the hidden power present in the familiar and mundane. In the simple act of observation, we uncover that imagination is not limited to our minds alone, but can be molded and shaped by the world around us.”
“Yet, simple as this may seem, it is a deeply complex process. It requires separating your own thoughts and biases from what an object, a moment, or a thing is trying to say. To force an idea into being is to impose, often reducing its essence to something fragile and unproven. But when we allow reality to present itself, and when we truly observe, it has the power to evolve into fiction that embodies its own narrative and meaning.”

Mini Studio
A student reflects on using the Framework alongside repeated work in Mini Studio.
“'Spatial Thinking a better way to structure creativity and define a design process.' From my experience, this is a very true description of what will happen directly when following the process, however, it understates the deeper effects it will have on the user.”
“Before using Spatial Thinking my original understanding and approach to design was very straightforward and linear because it had to be. Still, it lacked a deeper core to anchor everything down. This was very apparent while studying in college and onto my first year in university, leading to many approaches having a good concept but lacking the grounding to anchor them down.”
“Having read the Spatial Thinking Framework and started the Design Process, while doing two periods of Mini studio I have a clearer understanding of design. The concept I produced during my second period was more purposeful in its functions for the brief but also had a stronger design core.”
“This result speaks to a stronger design but also a greater internal strength. Others in the Mini Studio session have described me as having built greater confidence and overcome a challenge.”

1:1 Coaching
Individual comments on perspective, focused time and feedback around a project.
“I like the fresh perspectives that you give etc. and like the overall one on one time that is absent in uni can be given by you etc.”
“The last few sessions has been really great, it has broadened my vision in terms of the different ways that I could be approaching a project. I usually struggle with this phase of things and it's been valuable to have someone to point me at the right direction. I also always feel full after each session, always feeling like I've learnt something new/insightful.”
“My only regret is not managing my time better to fully benefit from his feedback—it was that helpful, and I wish I had used it more...”
“Very satisfied, he is very easy to talk to and gives concise, articulate responses to my questions”

Personal & Creative Development
Reflections on ownership, interest and a developing relationship with design.
“I've never felt this much of ownership in my life to be honest. I think mainly it's coming from the relationship I have with design... Design, wakes me up. I can talk so much longer about ideas. I love the moment delivering my intention. Pieces coming together is beautiful. I've learned this relationship not from architecture school but from Spatial Thinking.”
“His feedback on our work and his ability to understand our creative personalities have been transformative”
“Ken is not only good at teaching techniques but also at making students passionate. He knows how to push people.”

It wasn’t just motivation for studying, but also for time management and life in general. He dedicated a lot of time to his students both during and outside of class, giving feedback on their questions and activities. “Out of all the teachers who have taught me over the years, only two have gotten me inspired and helped me grow and understand myself not only academically but in all other aspects aswell. Ken was my teacher previously during semester 2 for Spatial Communications, and now he was our teacher for Studio. With his experience in the working field and even sharing his experiences when he was a student like us, opened up different views for us students, that not only want us to be excel in the way Ken has, but better. I think from all the input he has given us through feedbacks in our modules and even just understanding our personalities when we create, it helped us shape ourselves better and helped us approach situations in multiple different lights so that when we create solutions through design, it is both beautiful and practical in today's world.”

This made me to go beyond my limit and to improve. Ken is not only good at teaching techniques but also at making students passionate. He knows how to push people. In addition, his honest stories about professional experience helped me to think about life as an architect and professional world. One thing I can say with all my heart is that the experience in DSPC with Ken made me to love architecture more. It was such a luck to meet him at the beginning of my architecture journey.”

“Best teacher I have, I certainly love the approach he takes when teaching and is very helpful and provides honest and great feedback.”
“I don't know how to describe but Ken Chan's explanations of courses on designs and teaching the ways how to approach designing step by step helped me on figuring on how the designing process should start. For example, he explained that the sketches should be made for multiple assets till it gets to the point where you think as a final one, when you check back the process you made on this design can be explained how the thoughts on the process have started and the changes during each improvement, The chosen one could be the one in the middle or the final one, the important thing is the process. He also explained how to approach on start taking the approach of a sketch. For me, I would say that Ken really helps the students on which way the student can improve their skills, and also his explanations are direct and understandable.”
“I really enjoyed having Ken as a tutor, he always approached me with a positive attitude and was always willing to push me to the next level.”

His class were always engaging and useful, and he was very patient with everyone in the class, always encouraging the students to push themselves and try harder. I have learned so many things related to this course and overall architecture from Mr chan. In so many other classes, you just read from a text on canvas, but in his classes, Mr Chan asks questions and gets the students to respond, which is both fun and promotes faster learning. He is patient and eager to help during class hours or outside. As a student, you feel pushed to learn and try out new competencies, feel safe and supported, and gain valuable feedback that helps you improve. “He is always teaching and my other classmates and I will all agree that we are all engaged with his teachings. He always supports us on our current work and criticises what we need to improve to be our better selves. “Ken's teaching of this course at UTS College is very helpful, as student of this course understanding him in the way that he teaches isn't issue. The class content as well as assignments and set tasks are explained well which allows us to gain more knowledge on what we are going to be assessed on preparing us for the task. His feedback and comments about our work also allows us as students to gain an understanding of the course and helps in better preparing for future tasks.”
“Ken has spoken about my assignment and to others in my class to speak and go through the assignment to understand it clearly. He has explained the work and provided us with basic steps of what he expects within our assignment. Ken has replied to my emails out of class regarding any issues with my assignment or any help needed.”
“He is a very good teacher and person and he is very approachable. However, he teaching style isn't very strict so students don't tend to finish tutorial work and or understand assessments since he doesn't go through them. He sometimes favours the same people and their work which is very discouraging at times. Overall he is a great teacher.”
