03 Everyday Process · Lesson 1 of 24

What Is The Everyday

Architects understand the idea of the everyday.

Designers might understand the concept but not as directly as architects do. Architects deal with the everyday because buildings are the stage upon which human phenomena occurs daily. Whilst a designer can consider an object within the everyday, the architect needs to play directly with it.

Architects need to understand how time passes, how phenomena affects things, how yearly events occur and how humans perceive and live within different time frames, zones, spaces both internally and externally. We need to know how humans collect and interact over time and how non-humans and non-animate things move across decades and centuries.

This idea of the Everyday is simply an understanding of reality within the steady pace of time.

There are two parts of the Everyday Process that Spatial Thinking considers:

What Happens To Your Design…

Of course we need to design with and consider the everyday phenomena in and around your design project. The concept of the Everyday involves how the project literally and conceptually interacts with reality.

And What Happens To You

How you behave everyday, and how your surroundings affect you, what your processes are and how effective they allow you to be, all affect you as a designer. All the things that happen to you, and you make happen to yourself, every day, subconsciously and habitually, is the Everyday Process for you.

How you see things, how you conceptualise and ideate everyday, how you walk, talk and dance... it all affects you as a designer. Perhaps the one thing every design school forgets to reinforce is that, design starts from the everyday life, not at the school, and it must overtake many of your everyday processes in order for you to design. If it doesn't, no amount of rules, lessons and techniques can save you from creating designs that miss the mark: unfelt, boring designs.

To learn to design, you need to live it, everyday

The Everyday provides you with insights that can be more powerful and louder than what you hear in the media.
