01 Design Process · Lesson 1 of 121
Observe > Abstract > Translate
Welcome to the first Core Process—the Design Process! This is the most important process of them all.
It is also the most expansive, and what we present here are only the Core Principles—foundations that branch endlessly into all fields and professions, encompassing the essence of all creative endeavours.
Spatial Thinking's Design Process is expansive—it extends beyond the duration of a project's design process, and begins way before the project starts. What we are describing here isn't specific to design. We are describing a state of being and a process that underlies all genius.
Your past, ideas and experiences that come into play within a project, were all there way before the project began. What other creative education courses lack comes from their narrow focus on design projects alone. In order to innovate, your design process must already be underway outside of the project. Perhaps this is confusing, because we are clearly not designing every single day. So how do we continue a design process without design?
The answer is: We are always designing! Every spoken word, action and life decision is designed based on ideas and measures. Everything that you see is designed and the way you see them is by design and trained by years of conditioning. You could argue that this conditioning is a result of other people designing how you should behave and see. One of the things we do with the Spatial Thinking Design Process, is spend time designing with our own conditioning and removing the role others play in controlling our lives.
Create a new base condition. Feel the fabric of your life and the life around you. And if you can do that, the design project finds its way to fit into your story, rather than the other way around.
The Core Principles of this process are Observe, Abstract and Translate. Core ideas need to be simple and powerful. These three ideas sound simple, but they might make more sense and add more depth if it was said like this:
Observe Conservation
Abstract Truth
Translate Poetically
Each of these principles is expanded in later sections.
