What Happens in Your First Architecture Coaching Session?

Architectural drawings and laptop on a worktable

You don't need to have a good project before asking for design help. That's rather the point.

Architecture students have an odd habit of hiding the part of the project they don't understand. They spend another week making drawings look respectable, then bring those drawings to a critique hoping someone will tell them they are on the right track.

But if the real issue is how you're thinking, a better-looking drawing won't solve it.

Bring what you've actually got

Bring your studio brief, a site plan, a concept that feels weak, unfinished sketches, a model, a section, a portfolio page or even a single awkward decision. Share PDFs, drawings or your screen. You don't need to perform expertise for me.

A good starting question might be: 'I've been drawing for three weeks and still don't know what the project is about.' Or: 'My tutor says the concept isn't strong, but can't explain why.' Those are useful questions. Far more useful than 'Can you make this look better?'

We work on the thinking behind the drawing

In a coaching session, I want to understand what you observed, what you think the project is about, which decisions follow from that idea and where they stop making sense.

Sometimes the problem is an observation you never properly made. Sometimes you have a perfectly good concept but you're translating it into form mechanically. Sometimes your plan is solving one problem while your section contradicts it.

The purpose is not for me to design your project for you. It's for you to leave understanding something you didn't understand before, with a stronger basis for your next decisions.

You can start with a single session

Student Coaching is online and one-to-one. A 60-minute session is $70. Four sessions are $250, which gives a live studio project room to develop across several weeks. There is also a monthly option on the coaching page.

Mini Studio is different. It's a weekly small-group environment where you bring your own work, receive direct critique and learn alongside other students. It is $55 per month.

If you are unsure which makes sense, book a free introduction. It's a 30-minute conversation. Bring the question you're trying to solve and we can discuss where to begin.

The thing I want you to take away

Your degree gives you only a handful of studios. I don't want you spending those years being told to 'trust the process' without anyone teaching you what that process actually is.

Bring your own agenda. Your project stays yours. Let's make the time you spend designing count.
