Taking over another firm's project: when big assumptions don't work

Architectural drawings and a laptop on a desk

I once took over a project from another well-known practice. What I found were some large assumptions that simply didn't work.

Big assumptions are invisible

Every design rests on assumptions: about the site, the brief, how people will use it, what it will cost to build. When they're right, nobody notices them. When they're wrong, the whole design leans on something that isn't there.

Reputation doesn't test assumptions

A famous name on the drawings doesn't mean every decision has been tested. Good practices make big assumptions too. The difference is whether someone stops to question them before the project is too far along to change.

What this means for you

Whether it's your own studio project or one you inherit at work, question the big assumptions first. They decide more about the outcome than any detail you'll draw later.
