I once saved a project that was struggling. It was a simple glass box, and the project architect couldn't design it. That surprises people, because a glass box sounds like the easiest thing in architecture. It's one of the hardest.
Simple isn't easy
With a simple building there's nothing to hide behind. Every proportion, junction and edge is on show. A complicated form can hide a weak idea; a glass box can't. If the thinking behind it is unclear, the building looks like nothing.
What this means for you
Students often think a stronger design means a more complicated one. Usually it means a clearer idea. The concepts are simple, but achieving them consistently isn't easy, and that's exactly what a strong design process is for.
