When you hit a creative block, the usual advice is to go for a walk, sleep on it, or get curious. You take the walk, and you come home to the same block. In my experience, creativity is at its best in the moment between things, and learning to work with that moment is something we teach.
Why the usual advice often fails
A walk isn't magic. Neither is a break, a new playlist or a change of desk. Students try all of these and still sit in front of the same blank page, because the activity itself was never the point.
The moment between
Ideas arrive at inconvenient times: in the shower, falling asleep, halfway through something else. That isn't random bad luck. It's how creativity naturally works, and there's a reason it happens in the moment between one thing and the next. Once you understand that moment, you can stop waiting for it and start working with it.
What we teach
In Spatial Thinking we teach how that in-between state works, how to get into it more often, and how to keep the ideas it gives you, instead of losing them or forcing them. It's one of the ideas in the Spatial Thinking Framework that most design courses never touch.
