Architecture student portfolio: how to make first-year work stand out

A modern building with a sharply angled roof

Wouldn't you want a third-year-level project in your first year? Or a master's-level project in your second year? That's exactly what we did for my students. A portfolio stands out because of the projects in it, not the layout around them.

What our students achieved

  • First-year Diploma students developed pavilion projects that looked like third-year Bachelor work: highly original, well-resolved designs for their first ever design projects.
  • Second-year Bachelor students turned a standard student housing project into a master's-level design, pushing the boundaries of the brief.
  • A first-year Bachelor student produced thoughtful, well-considered floor plans that became portfolio-ready, far beyond the basic assignment. Those plans later helped him land an internship.

What made the difference

Not more rendering, and not a better template. Each of them learnt a stronger design process and got precise feedback on their own project, so the work itself got better. A strong project needs very little help from the layout.

What to do now

Don't wait for a better brief or a better tutor. You only get a few studios, and each one is a chance to make a portfolio project. Bring the project you're working on now and push it further.
